Zen Orb

The Xen Orb is a vocally guided synthesizer (VDS) prototype. A throat microphone picks up vibrations which are used to select a melody. pitch, chord family and arpeggiator notes in a predetermined key. Intended for busking and vocal accompaniment.

How does this work: A signal from a throat microphone is amplified, filtered and provided to a microprocessor. The microprocessor extracts a fundamental pitch from the microphone signal and applies that to a preselected musical key to identify a melody tone and harmonic notes based on that melody tone, the key, and the preceding tones. This information is used to provide pitch signals to MIDI commands triggered by the three chord buttons and a MIDI polyphonic expression signal for a melody signal controlled by a physical volume control. A simple drum sequencer and arpeggiator is also provided, the arpeggiator frequency following the identified cord family. The output is sent via USB to a DAW performing the actual synthesis, in this case Ableton. If there is any interest, I'll put together a PCB, parts list, and clean up the code.
